Symantec AntiVirus installation on Windows Vista

First, you need to determine whether your version of Windows Vista is 32-bit or 64-bit.

  1. Open the Start Menu, right-click on Computer and choose Properties.
  2. Under System, you will see an entry for System Type. This will be either 32-bit or 64-bit.

Then, download the appropriate (32- or 64-bit) AntiVirus software from the AntiVirus website and follow these instructions to install it on your computer running Windows Vista.

Note: Before installing Symantec Antivirus Client, uninstall any existing virus software you have on your computer.

  1. Find the file you downloaded and double-click on it.
  2. The ZipCentral Self Extracting Archive Extract screen will appear. Click Extract to continue.
  3. When all the files are extracted, click OK.
  4. When the A Program needs your permission to continue window appears, click Continue.
  5. In the Welcome to the InstallShield Wizard for Symantec AntiVirus window, click Next.
  6. Read the License Agreement and select I accept the terms in the license agreement. Click Next.
  7. In the Setup Type window, ensure Complete is selected. Click Next.
  8. In the Ready to Install the Program window, click Install.
  9. If the Old Virus Definition File window appears, click Close. Be sure you are connected to the internet, as your computer will now download new virus definitions.
  10. When the LiveUpdate - Options window pops up, click Next to search for new updates.
  11. Click Finish when LiveUpdate is completed.
  12. Click Finish again in the InstallShield Wizard window.
  13. Restart Windows when the "Updating Virus Protection Files" window has closed.
  14. After rebooting, the Windows Security Alerts icon may still be visible in the tray area. Double-click it and click the Turn On button within the Spyware and Other malware protection heading. In the Choose an antispyware option window, select Turn on Symantec Antivirus, and click the Yes, I trust this program and am ready to run it option. Click the Continue button to finish.
  15. You should now see a yellow shield in the taskbar (lower right of your screen). Your computer will be protected at all times, and will receive automatic virus definitions every week through U of T's servers.
