Error Installing Symantec Antivirus on 64-bit Windows Vista
This error applies to installations from CD only. If you have a broadband internet connection (cable or wireless), please visit antivirus.utoronto.ca and download a new copy of the 64-bit Symantec Antivirus. This file is about 40MB in size. If downloading is not a feasible option for you, continue reading this article.
When installing 64-bit Symantec Antivirus for Windows Vista from your CD, you may encounter the following error message towards the end of the installation:
Error 2324: GetLastError Return Value(2) in loading driver C:\WIndows\system32\Drivers\srtsp64.inf
This is a result of the installer lacking sufficient privileges. To solve this problem, follow the steps below.
- Open the Start menu and click on Computer.
- Place the software CD you received from the Information Commons in your CD/DVD Drive. Right-click on the CD icon and click Explore.
- Drag the folder called SAVWin64VISTA to your desktop.
- Open the Start Menu. In the search box, type cmd and hold Ctrl and Shift while pressing Enter.
- User Account Control should now tell you Windows needs your permission to run Windows Command Processor. Click Continue. If Windows Command Processor runs without asking you for permission, you need to start again. Be sure to press all three keys (Ctrl Shift and Enter) at once.
- Copy the following text, quotations included: "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\SAVWin64Vista\x64\Symantec AntiVirus Win64.msi"
- Right-click anywhere in the Windows Command Processor window and click Paste. Press Enter.
- Your installation should now run without issue.
