Preventing or avoiding Spyware

Spyware is a kind of malicious software which often threatens your privacy and slows computer performence. Please follow these suggestions in order to protect your computer.

  • Be extremely careful when installing freeware or shareware. Many such products include multiple spyware programs which get installed at the same time. Peer-to-Peer (P2P) File sharing programs (KaZaA, Grokster, Limewire etc.) are notorious for spreading this kind of malicious software. If you're not familiar with a particular product, ask for advice.
  • Be careful when prompted to run an installer program; never do so if you did not initiate the installation.
  • Keep your computer up to date with patches - some spyware will exploit known vulnerabilities to install themselves. If you use Windows, you may wish to consult the Windows Update website (note: you must use Internet Explorer to access this website).
