Configuring Thunderbird for UTORmail

Before you start, you will need to know your configuration number for the IMAP (Incoming Mail) Server. Go to the UTORid Get Information page, enter your UTORid and password and click Authenticate. Write down the configuration number for reference.

  1.   If you are using Thunderbird for the first time, you may see the Import Wizard window. Select Skip this and use my existing email. You should then see the Mail Account Setup window. If you don't, you can add a new account by going to File > New > Existing Mail Account.
  2. Type your full name under Your name. Click Continue.

  3. Type your email address under Email address (Note: do not enter your password at this time).
  4. Click Continue.
  5. Thunderbird will gather information and display some default settings (see image below).

    These settings must be changed.
    • Beside Incoming:
      • Choose IMAP
      • type (where NN is the configuration number you wrote down earlier)
      • For Port, type 993
      • For SSL, choose SSL/TLS
      • For Authentication, choose Normal password
    • Beside Outgoing:
      • keep the existing info as
      • For Port, type 587
      • For SSL, choose STARTTLS
      • For Authentication, choose Normal password
    • Change Username to your UTORid (all lowercase)
  6. Click Re-test.
  7. Click Done.
  8. Click on your Inbox in the Thunderbird window. You will be prompted for your password. Enter it and click OK.

Regarding deleted emails: by default Thunderbird moves deleted emails to the local Trash folder. This folder is not accessible from Webmail.

Further settings are required to ensure optimum performance using Thunderbird for UTORmail.

Note: These are the recommended settings for ensuring the smoothest experience in using Thunderbird for UTORmail.

  1. Open Tools > Account Settings and under the UTORmail account, click Server Settings.
  2. Click Advanced.

  3. In the new window, uncheck Show only subscribed folders, then click OK to return to Server Settings.

  4. On the left hand side, go to Junk Settings and uncheck Enable adaptive junk mail controls for this account

  5. On the left hand side, go to Syncronization & Storage, and uncheck Keep messages for this account on this computer.

  6. Click OK to save the settings.
  7. Click Get Mail and enter your password. You can have Thunderbird remember your password by clicking Use Password Manager to remember this password .
