Mac Mail 6.x configuration for UTORmail users


Mac OS X 10.8.x, also referred to as "Mountain Lion", and comes installed with Mac Mail version 6.x.

1(a). After starting Mail, you will see the Welcome to Mail window. (If this Window does not appear, go to the File menu, click Add Account.)
Enter the following:

  • Full Name: your first and last name
  • Email Address: your UTORmail address (firstname.lastname@utoronto.ca)
  • Password: your UTORid password

1(b). Mail will try to use it's auto-detect feature, but will find the wrong settings. Put your UTORid in the User Name field and click Continue.

2. In the Incoming Mail Server window, enter the following:

  • Account Type: IMAP
  • Description: UTORmail
  • Incoming Mail Server: mailboxNNN.utcc.utoronto.ca where NN is your configuration number (visit this site to look up your configuration number).
  • User Name: your UTORid
  • Password: your UTORid password

3. In the Incoming Mail Security window, enter the following:

  • Place a checkmark beside Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
  • Authentication: Password

4. In the Outgoing Mail Server window, enter the following:

  • Description: smtp.utoronto.ca
  • Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.utoronto.ca
  • Place a checkmark beside Use only this server
  • Place a checkmark beside Use Authentication
  • User Name: your UTORid
  • Password: your UTORid password

5. In the Outgoing Mail Security window, enter the following:

  • Place a checkmark besides Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
  • Authentication: Password

6. In the Account Summary window

  • Place a checkmark beside Take account online
  • Click Create

Other Configurations

Once your account has been set up, you can configure how often your email account checks for new mail by going to the Mail menu > Preferences > General. The default frequency is set to 5 minutes.

We also recommend turning off junk mail filtering under the Junk Mail section of the same window. Junk mail filtering is performed on the UTORmail server.
