Basic subscriber commands

You MUST subscribe from YOUR OWN e-mail account. The LISTSERV software extracts your e-mail address from the e-mail message you send then uses this address to distribute mail to you. List names are not case sensitive so you can type the name in upper or lower case.

To subscribe to a list, send an e-mail message to listserv@listserv.utoronto.ca (upper or lower case is acceptable). In the BODY of the message type a command of the form:

subscribe listname firstname lastname

For example, if you want to subscribe to CHEM230-L@listserv.utoronto.ca and your name is Terry Lee, you would type:

subscribe CHEM230-L terry lee

Quitting a List

You MUST quit a list using the same e-mail you used to subscribe to the list. The LISTSERV software extracts the e-mail address from the message you send.

If you want to quit a list, send a message to listserv@listserv.utoronto.ca . In the BODY of the message type a command of the form:

signoff listname

For example, if you want to quit the list CHEM230-L@listserv.utoronto.ca, you would type:

signoff CHEM230-L

Sending Mail to a List

To send a message to everyone subscribed to the list, send e-mail to listname-L@listserv.utoronto.ca , where "listname" is the name of the list. For example, if the name of the list is CHEM230-L, type CHEM230-L@listserv.utoronto.ca in the "To" field in your e-mail message. If you want to send e-mail only to the list owner, see the following section.

Note: Some lists may not allow you to send everyone e-mail. When you join a list, you are usually informed of the list's e-mail options.

Sending Mail to the List Owner

You can send e-mail to the list owner if you are experiencing difficulty with the list or if you just want to ask a question. For example, if you are subscribed to the list CHEM230-L@listserv.utoronto.ca, type
CHEM230-L-request@listserv.utoronto.ca in the "To" field in your e-mail message.

Which is Which?

Subscribers are sometimes confused about where to send e-mail:

  • To subscribe (join) or signoff (quit) the list, send e-mail to listserv@listserv.utoronto.ca and include the appropriate command (see above) in the BODY of the message. Is it "listserv" that manages membership of the various lists.

  • To send a message to everyone currently subscribed to a list, send e-mail to
    listname-L@listserv.utoronto.ca
    e.g., CHEM230-L@listserv.utoronto.ca

  • To send a message to only the list owner, send e-mail to
    listname-L-request@listserv.utoronto.ca
    e.g., CHEM230-L-request@listserv.utoronto.ca

Setting Digest Mode

You can request to have your messages sent in digest mode for a particular list. In digest mode, individual messages that would normally be sent throughout the day are combined into a single message and sent out just once. This is convenient if the list is a busy one, or if you just want to print all the daily messages and read them offline.

To set digest mode, send e-mail to listserv@listserv.utoronto.ca

In the body of the message type:

set listname digest

For example, if you are subscribed to the list CHEM230-L, you would type:

set CHEM230-L digest

Turning Off Mail Temporarily

You can temporarily suspend delivery of e-mail from a particular list if you will not be accessing your e-mail for a while (e.g., vacation, illness) and you don't want your e-mail inbox filled with many messages. Messages that are sent during the time you have it turned off will NOT be stored and sent to you when you resume delivery.

To turn off mail temporarily, send e-mail to listserv@listserv.utoronto.ca .

In the body of the message type:

set listname nomail

For example, if you are subscribed to the list CHEM230-L, you would type:

set CHEM230-L nomail

Resuming Delivery

When you know you will be checking your e-mail regularly again, you will want to resume delivery.

To resume delivery, send e-mail to listserv@listserv.utoronto.ca

In the body of the message type:

set listname mail

For example, if you are subscribed to the list CHEM230-L, you would type:

set CHEM230-L mail

Subscription Renewal

When you receive a renewal message from LISTSERV, press REPLY, erase the contents of the message, and type Confirm listname-l, where "listname" is the name of the list, in the body of the message (and nothing else) and send. If you fail to renew within 21 days you will be removed from the list and you will have to resubscribe.
